Dadaab MP Farah Maalim has distanced himself from an undated viral video showing him making inflammatory statements discrediting the Kenyan Gen Z movement. The lawmaker claimed the video, recorded at a recent book launch event in Somalia, has been manipulated to distort his words.
“It’s all editing, cutting and pasting, and putting words together. It’s basically a lot of nonsense,” Maalim stated, suggesting that Somalis might have altered the video for political reasons related to his commentary on Somalia’s politics.
In the video, a man purported to be Maalim is heard advocating for strong-arm tactics against 5,000 Gen Z protesters daily during demonstrations, allegedly to prevent an attempt to overthrow the government.
“That 5,000 figure was in line with what I said about the serious slaughter that happens whenever there is an attempt at a revolution to try to forcefully take over the government,” Maalim clarified.
Appearing on KTN News on Tuesday morning, Maalim insisted the video did not accurately represent the substance of his speech at the event.
The video, which has sparked public outrage, follows Maalim’s ongoing criticism of the methods used by younger Kenyans to pressure the government for better governance.
“When you occupy Statehouse and Parliament, two constitutional institutions that are a bedrock for the stability of the country and our democracy, that is a coup,” Maalim remarked, referring to the June 25 invasion of Parliament Buildings by protesters.
