Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir has expressed that the government is powerless in mitigating the current surge in fuel prices. Chirchir conveyed to the National Assembly’s Energy Committee that these price hikes are primarily a result of the unpredictable fluctuations in the global crude oil market. Additionally, he anticipates that the challenges in this regard will intensify, stating, “We are engaging with multiple governments and product suppliers, and unfortunately, we are likely to face even more trying times ahead. Regrettably, we are limited in our ability to address this situation due to our reliance on imported products.” This statement comes shortly after Trade CS Moses Kuria cautioned the Kenyan population to brace themselves for escalating costs of petrol, diesel, and kerosene, with prices expected to increase by Sh10 per month until February 2024.
Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir has said that there is nothing the government can do to reduce current high fuel prices.
