Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the issues faced by miraa farmers. While attending a church service at the Methodist Church of Kenya in Kaelo, Meru County, Gachagua called upon the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) to reconsider its classification of Miraa as a drug.He emphasized, “We want to clarify to NACADA that Miraa is not a drug; it’s a cash crop, just like any other. Those labeling Miraa as a drug are acting against the interests of the Meru Community.” Gachagua further stated that the same agricultural reforms implemented in the coffee sector would receive attention in the Miraa industry.Additionally, Gachagua assured that President William Ruto would fulfill his government’s commitments to support the Miraa sector by securing markets beyond the country’s borders.
