Peter Murima, Chairperson of the Motorists Association of Kenya (MOA), has directed criticism towards the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regarding the recent spike in accidents across the country, particularly focusing on incidents involving school buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an exclusive interview with media house, Murima highlighted the absence of a code of conduct for the school bus sector as a contributing factor to the escalating number of accidents. He accused NTSA of neglecting thorough vehicle inspections, which could identify and remove unroadworthy vehicles from circulation, thereby reducing the occurrence of crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a crackdown in the transport sector, revealing plans to introduce CCTV cameras inside school buses for enhanced monitoring. Additionally, all driving school graduates would undergo medical fitness tests before receiving driving licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these measures, Murima expressed concerns that some drivers may attempt to evade regulations, drawing parallels to previous issues with tampering with speed governors. He opposed the reintroduction of NTSA officers on roads, a move ordered by Murkomen to reverse a previous decision by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration to remove them from active duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With over 300 members under his association’s banner, Murima remains hopeful about implementing reforms within the sector. However, he emphasized the need for comprehensive changes, including stronger enforcement of regulations, improved vehicle inspections, and enhanced driver training programs, to effectively address the root causes of road accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
