The regulator suggests setting the initial cap at 20 blackouts per year, a reduction from the current average of 26. This limit is projected to remain in effect for the next five years, after which it will be further reduced to 15 blackouts per year.

Simultaneously, EPRA seeks to reduce the duration of power outages experienced by consumers, as measured by the System Average Interruption Duration Indicator (SAIDI). Currently standing at 115.73 minutes, the regulator proposes lowering the maximum outage duration to 80 minutes. Over the subsequent five years, EPRA aims to progressively decrease this figure to 45 minutes, ensuring more efficient and reliable electricity supply to homes and businesses nationwide.

These proposed measures underscore EPRA’s commitment to improving service standards and ensuring a more stable power supply infrastructure. By setting clear targets for blackout frequency and outage duration, EPRA aims to enhance consumer satisfaction and promote economic growth by minimizing disruptions to businesses and daily activities.

EPRA invites stakeholders and the public to provide feedback on these proposals, with the ultimate goal of implementing measures that will benefit all electricity consumers in Kenya.

The Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has unveiled proposals aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of electricity supply for consumers across Kenya.
