The Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR) has issued a damning critique against security officials and National Administration Officers involved in the Shakahola massacre, urging prompt accountability and justice for the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their recent report titled “Mashaka ya Shakahola,” released on Friday, March 22, KNCHR accuses these officers of gross negligence, asserting that their actions and inactions directly contributed to the tragic events of the massacre. According to KNCHR, authorities in Malindi had numerous opportunities to intervene and prevent the loss of life, especially following the apprehension of Paul Mackenzie in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report exposes that concerns regarding Mackenzie’s extremist activities were brought to light during a meeting of the Kilifi County Court User\u2019s Committee in November 2019, yet no decisive action was taken. KNCHR further highlights the struggles of individuals who attempted to raise alarms about the unfolding crisis in Shakahola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One former follower of Mackenzie shared her desperate attempts to bring attention to the situation via social media in November 2022. However, instead of addressing the claims, she faced intimidation and unfounded accusations. In a troubling revelation, the report outlines how authorities coerced social media platform administrators into removing posts discussing the massacre, sparking concerns about freedom of expression and the suppression of critical information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KNCHR demands swift action from the government, including the immediate exhumation of bodies in Shakahola and support for survivors in retrieving lost documents due to indoctrination and radicalization. Government records from April to October of the previous year indicate that 429 bodies have already been exhumed, with 67 adults and 25 children rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasked with promoting and safeguarding human rights, KNCHR has been closely monitoring the Shakahola tragedy since March 2023. In their recommendations, KNCHR urges Parliament to enact legislation enabling churches to self-regulate, drawing parallels to existing frameworks like the Media Council of Kenya and the law society of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
