In a Senate session that left many stunned, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki provided insight into the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Meru County-based blogger Daniel Muthiani Bernard, known as Sniper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to inquiries from Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri, Kindiki delved into a harrowing account of betrayal and violence that shook the nation. Senator Kathuri sought clarification on the progress of investigations into the abduction, torture, and eventual killing of Daniel Muthiani Bernard, also known as Sniper, who vanished on December 2, 2023. He voiced concerns over the prolonged investigation period and the lack of consistent updates, echoing the sentiments of a nation deeply affected by the tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kindiki’s revelations painted a grim picture of deception and brutality. He revealed that Muthiani was lured into a fatal trap by an aide to Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing the sequence of events, Kindiki explained, “On December 2, 2023, the victim was at home when he received a call from (name withheld), who invited him to Marytown under the pretext of attending a meeting with the Meru County governor to resolve their differences.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trusting the invitation, Muthiani fell into the trap and was abducted upon reaching Meru Town. Kindiki continued, “Upon arrival in Meru Town, he was kidnapped and taken to Mutonga River in Chakariga, Tarakanithi County. There, he was murdered and his body disposed of in River Mutonga at Mutonga Bridge, where it remained undiscovered for several days.”The shocking discovery of Muthiani’s mutilated remains on December 6, 2023, by a Karikivi resident marked the start of a painstaking investigation. Law enforcement from Chakariga Police Station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) responded, recovering the victim’s body from the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequent forensic analysis by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor determined the cause of death as ligature strangulation-induced asphyxia, revealing the brutality of Muthiani’s demise. Oduor also revealed signs of torture inflicted before his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigations led to the identification of five individuals allegedly involved in the abduction and murder. Post-mortem samples indicated the presence of systemic insecticides, implicating the accused in the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the investigation findings, murder charges were recommended against the five accused individuals, who pleaded not guilty before the High Court at Kiambu. They are currently in custody at Nairobi and Kitengela Remand Prisons, awaiting trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing concerns about delayed investigations, Kindiki assured the Senate of the government’s commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms, including freedom of expression and the right to information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
