Kenya has been attempting to acquire a new office for its UK mission since the High Commissioner and staff’s lease expired in October 2021.

Lawmakers pointed out that the project was delayed because the tender for the chancery purchase was invalidated when Kenya failed to secure a conveyancing lawyer. A previous audit by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu revealed that the country spent about Ksh58.63 million annually to lease the London chancery from 2021 to August 2023, after which the cost increased to Ksh95.18 million.

Gathungu’s audit report also highlighted the substandard conditions of some buildings housing Kenyan diplomats. To address this, the government allocated Ksh2.3 billion for the construction and repair of Kenyan embassies worldwide in the 2024/25 budget.

Repairs for government properties in New York are estimated to cost Ksh841 million, followed by embassies in Lusaka (Ksh30 million), Mogadishu (Ksh25 million), Rome (Ksh21 million), Washington DC (Ksh20 million), and Dar es Salaam (Ksh20 million).

Additionally, new embassies are planned for Kinshasa (Ksh20 million), Addis Ababa (Ksh20 million), Hague (Ksh15 million), Pretoria (Ksh10 million), and Kampala (Ksh10 million).

Kenya maintains over 60 diplomatic missions abroad to advance the country’s interests.

Members of Parliament raised concerns over Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s request for an extra Ksh350 million for the acquisition of a new embassy in London and renovations at the New York mission.
