Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has committed to addressing the high fees Kenyan students are charged in South African educational institutions. During a meeting with the leadership of the Kenya Diaspora Association in South Africa on Friday, the DP highlighted the significant financial challenges faced by Kenyan students in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kenyan students studying in South Africa are subjected to high school fees because they are deemed to be foreigners,” Gachagua noted in his address. He assured the Kenyan community that measures would be taken to mitigate these costs, including integrating the affected students into Kenya’s Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) program to alleviate their financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Deputy President attributed the high fees to the status of the students as foreign nationals and emphasized the need for immediate intervention. “We will ensure that Kenyan students in South Africa are included in the HELB program to cushion them from the huge fees they incur,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gachagua also expressed his commitment to resolving this issue promptly by discussing it with the Ministry of Education and President William Ruto. “We are dedicated to expediting this process to ensure our students are not overburdened by exorbitant fees,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the high educational fees, Kenyans living in South Africa face other challenges, such as high airline ticket costs compared to neighboring countries and an unconducive environment for trade and investment. Gachagua pledged to address these issues as well, aiming to improve the overall experience for Kenyans in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Deputy President’s visit to South Africa was part of an official delegation representing President William Ruto at Cyril Ramaphosa’s swearing-in ceremony following his re-election. Gachagua conveyed President Ruto’s congratulatory message during the inauguration on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in Pretoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This diplomatic engagement follows a series of discussions aimed at strengthening trade and education ties between Kenya and South Africa. Four months prior, Presidents Ruto and Ramaphosa met at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where they agreed on several measures to enhance bilateral relations, including reinstating visa-free entry between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
