Demonstrators marched along Lang’ata Road, carrying placards emblazoned with messages such as “Pitisha Finance Bill” (Pass the Finance Bill).

The protesters criticized fellow citizens who oppose the bill, suggesting that anti-Finance Bill demonstrators should cease their protests and return to work. Some placards expressed support for MPs who had voted in favor of the bill, encouraging them to maintain their stance until the legislation is signed into law by President William Ruto.

“Tunasimama na serikali, tuna support prezzo #Pitisha Finance Bill” (We stand with the government and support the President #Pass the Finance Bill), read one placard held by the pro-bill demonstrators.

Similar demonstrations were observed in sections of Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, where residents voiced their support for their MP, Kimani Ichung’wah, and his endorsement of the bill. Protesters argued that the bill, if enacted, would create avenues for more development financing, benefiting a majority of Kenyans.

Notably, these pro-Finance Bill protests occurred amid larger nationwide demonstrations against the controversial bill. In some areas, such as the South Bypass, transport was disrupted by residents blocking roads to express their opposition.

The protests coincide with a section of MPs, led by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Molo MP Kuria Kimani, who advocate for the bill. The leaders emphasized that the bill offers more benefits than drawbacks, contrary to claims by the opposition and other protesters. However, they acknowledged that amendments would be made to address concerns that the bill might increase the cost of living.

Last week, the Finance Committees approved the removal of several proposed taxes, including those on motor vehicles, an eco-levy on locally made goods, VAT on bread, excise duty on vegetable oil, VAT on financial services, and taxes on foreign exchange transactions, among other changes.

On Tuesday, a group of Kenyans took to the streets to rally support for the Finance Bill 2024, urging Members of Parliament to pass the proposed legislation.
