Susan Mang’eni, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), emphasized the pivotal role of MSMEs in Kenya’s economy during a panel discussion on KBC. Mang’eni highlighted that MSMEs contribute approximately 40% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generate 90% of employment opportunities, underscoring their significance in driving economic growth and fostering employment.

Despite their substantial contributions, Mang’eni noted that the MSME sector remains under-exploited, suggesting that it has the potential to increase its GDP contribution to as much as 80%. This observation underscores a significant untapped economic potential within the sector, which, if effectively harnessed, could lead to substantial economic growth and development.

In a related development, Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh disclosed government plans to employ seven young people from each ward to support agricultural programs, with an initial recruitment of 3,000 youths during the recent Madaraka Day celebrations.

President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) aims to leverage high-impact sectors like MSMEs to drive economic recovery. Key objectives include reducing the cost of living, eradicating hunger, creating jobs, expanding the tax base, improving foreign exchange balances, and promoting inclusive growth. These initiatives are poised to further bolster Kenya’s economic resilience and development.
