It is the visceral form of the disease and causes high fever, anaemia, weight loss and swelling of the liver and spleen. It is caused by a small female insect called sandfly which feeds on blood to produce eggs. The disease is common in drier areas and tends to affect the poor especially those with poor housing, or those with low immunity and malnutrition. If the disease is untreated, it can kill over 90% of those infected. There are however effective medications for its treatment.
