On Wednesday 13th January 2021, the eve of Uganda’s General Elections, all internet gateways in Uganda were shut down.
Ugandans could not access the internet via mobile devices and wireless connections. No online business was conducted during the period. Online Shopping Apps, Banking Apps and Social Media platforms were completely inaccessible.
Asked why he had to subject the country to such losses, the President said the internet shutdown was in retaliation to Facebook’s decision to take down some pro-government accounts.
