Renowned scholar and former ICT Permanent Secretary Prof. Elijah Bitange Ndemo has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
The appointment was confirmed in an official letter dated May 2, 2025, signed by University Council Chairperson Prof. Amukowa Anangwe. The letter, which was also copied to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, announced that Prof. Ndemo will assume office once he concludes his diplomatic duties in Brussels, where he currently serves as Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium.
In the interim, Prof. Francis Mulaa, who was recently appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, will serve as the acting Vice Chancellor. His acting tenure will continue until Prof. Ndemo returns to formally take up the role—expected within the next six months.
The University Council emphasized that the appointments were made to ensure continuity and avoid a leadership vacuum following the end of Prof. Margaret Hutchinson’s acting term as Vice Chancellor.
According to the memo, Prof. Mulaa will fully execute the responsibilities and authority of the Vice Chancellor in line with the Universities Act, 2012, the University of Nairobi Charter, 2013, and relevant government policies and directives.
