UEFA have confirmed that the Champions league is going to be very different come the 2024/25 season and the new format will include 36 clubs from the usual 32 teams and go from 125 games to 189. It’s called the ‘Swiss Model’ and sees all clubs placed in the same table, playing eight group matches rather than eight groups of four as is the case now.
Here is everything you need to know about the big changes of the 23/24 season which will have 64 extra games;
It is set to increase from 32 teams to 36 teams, there will no longer be groups of four but instead it will be one league table where each team will play eight different teams comprising of four home games an
d four away games.
It’s expected that UEFA will create four pots of nine teams with each side playing two teams from each pot so be prepared to have more big matches at the start of the campaign.
The top eight teams qualify automatically for the knockout stages/round of 16, Sides in 9th-24th will enter a two-legged playoff fixture for the remaining eight places where the winners will go into the last 16 and the loosing teams will be eliminated from the competition. The sides that finish 24th-36th will be eliminated and not drop down into the Europa League.
The last 16, quarter finals, semi finals and final will have no changes. Now to the part everyone wants to know, the four extra spots; the first one goes to the team finishing 3rd in the league ranked 5th in UEFA coefficient currently ‘Ligue 1’, the team that will finish fourth in that league will go to the UCL qualifying rounds rather than qualify for the Europa league.
The second spot will have a team in a league outside the top 10 of UEFA coefficient rank, so one team that champions such a league has a shot at champions league football. The remaining two spots will go to the leagues ranked one and two by UEFA currently the premier league and Eredivisie meaning the leagues that ranked one and two by UEFA this summer will have five instead of four teams qualifying for the champions league. And that’s where Liverpool is aiming its luck to land champions league football.
