Governor Kawira Mwangaza in Hot Soup Again as Her Case Lands in Senate, EACC
Months after surviving the impeachment motion, Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has once again found herself in hot soup.
This was after the first-term governor was accused of looting public money. According to reports, Kawira Mwangaza is accused of misappropriating Ksh42.4 million shillings which are said to have been irregularly paid to a section of her family members and close confidants.
This was after one resident from Meru County presented a petition before the senate and EACC, requesting for Kawira to be investigated over the alleged loss of funds. The complainant claimed that the money was swindled in less than one year that Kawira has been in office.
The complainant by the name Thuranira Salesio Mutuma a.k.a The Meru Omtata, claimed that Kawira had been using her family members to steal public money contrary to the constitution.
Among the family members who have been accused by the complainant include Mirriam Guantai (Kawira’s sister) Rose Guantai and Nephat Kinyua. The three are said to have been employed in the county and have been receiving huge money from the county government coffers.
Rose is accused of receiving a total of Ksh2.7 between September 2022 and July 2023 for unspecified reasons.
Kawira survived an impeachment motion in December 2022 after she was saved by the Senate. The Senate Special Committee, led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, said that none of the allegations raised against Governor Mwangaza by Meru County Assembly Members could be substantiated or proved by her accusers.
Khalwale said that the Committee was investigating the Governor against allegations of nepotism, illegal appointments, incitement and bullying of other leaders and forceful entry of the Meru County Assembly none of which could be substantiated.
