Political leaders from Mount Kenya, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Security Minister Kithure Kindiki have been caught up in the crisis pushing for the removal from office of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. This comes after Agriculture Minister Mithika Linturi and former governor and leader of the Devolution Empowerment (DEP) party, Kiraitu Murungi, were among the high-level leaders who entered into this conflict as well.
Mr. Gachagua has been told to stay away from Meru affairs because more than 60 out of 69 councilors said they would sign a motion to remove Ms. Mwangaza from office on allegations of incompetence.
Mr. Murungi and Mr. Linturi have commented on this issue, stating that they tried to assist Ms. Mwangaza in leading the county but were unsuccessful, with Mr. Linturi saying they have washed their hands and left the councilors to do their work according to the constitution.”Let me assure you that the president and his deputy have no vested interests here and will respect the will of the people,” he added.
On Monday, the minority party with 21 councilors (DEP), the Jubilee Party (10), and the NoPEU party with three councilors joined the UDA and DP parties and independent councilors in opposing Ms. Mwangaza, saying they are ready to remove her.At least 27 ward representatives from UDA, DP, and independents decided to oust the governor for the second time after the first attempt was overturned by the Senate on December 30, 2022.
Former Agriculture Minister Peter Munya through his party PNU with five councilors is expected to announce his stance on Wednesday, September 26.A total of 61 ward representatives have said they will sign a motion to remove Ms. Mwangaza from office. This motion has already been written, according to DEP Secretary-General Alhaji Mwendia, who told President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua to stay away from this plan.”We are sending her home to save Meru. “In our first attempt, we were told the governor, who has failed to unite the people of Meru, was assisted by the president and his deputy,” Mr. Mwendia exclaimed. The first motion to oust Governor Mwangaza, who does not appear in public, was pushed by Abogeta West Councilor Denis Kiogora.
These ward representatives oppose the governor for continuing the Okolea Kaana ka Meru (Save a Meru Child) program, which distributes products such as mattresses, cows, blankets, clothing, and so on to rural areas.Critics argue that this program is not a development initiative, but Ms. Mwangaza boasts of winning this battle as she did in the election to become governor
