The Chief Justice and JSC Chairperson Martha Koome yesterday presided over the swearing-in of 69 Resident Magistrates. The Judicial Service Commission appointed the judicial officers on 8th August 2023.
The Resident Magistrates have been gazetted as magistrates, deputy registrars, adjudicators & will also handle children and succession matters. The judicial officers have been posted to various stations around the country, especially to areas with gazetted Small Claims Courts.
Following their appointment and deployment, the magistrates have been shadowing judicial officers in their new stations. They will undergo further induction this week to ensure seamless commencement in the discharge of their judicial duties.
The swearing-in of the magistrates and operationalization of more Small Claims courts will increase access to justice, aid in expediting hearing and determination of cases and reduce case backlog.
This is in line with the Commission’s commitment to enhance administration of justice by strengthening the human resource capacity of the Judiciary.
