The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a warning about handling potential hyena encounters. In their statement on January 9, 2024, KWS highlighted that hyenas typically opt for scavenging, being more inclined to feed on easy meals like dead animals rather than actively hunting prey. While emphasizing the essential role of hyenas as scavengers in maintaining the ecosystem, KWS observed their behavior during the day, noting their tendency to gaze at the sky and follow circling vultures as a unique GPS for locating potential prey. Despite their ecological role, KWS acknowledged the potential threat hyenas pose to humans and provided safety tips, advising against running, as it may trigger the hyena’s predatory instincts.
