Minister of Health Susan Nakhumicha has stated that corruption in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which will be replaced by the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), has resulted in many Kenyans being denied medical treatment. The minister mentioned that NHIF is a leaking vessel and will therefore be discarded, introducing a new plan through the authority of SHA to assist Kenyans in healthcare and improve health services in the country.Speaking in the Mwatate area during the launch of the cervical cancer awareness month, Ms. Nakhumicha highlighted the challenges faced by NHIF, including corruption and fraud, especially among staff and healthcare facilities. She stated that this situation has led to many Kenyans paying for the insurance but not receiving the services they deserve.“NHIF is like a leaking container, so we cannot continue using it. We have discarded it and bought a new one,” she said. The minister mentioned that reducing the plan’s premiums from Sh500 to Sh300 will enable more Kenyans to join the program.“It will ensure that every Kenyan receives quality healthcare regardless of their income. This time, this plan must work,” stated Ms. Nakhumicha.
