A fire erupted at the Nacico Co. Chambers Building in the bustling Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) on Monday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the city.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire originated from one of the shops within the building, located near Imenti House. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at the time of this publication.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and Nairobi County askaris, swiftly descended on the scene to tackle the blaze. The area was cordoned off by the police in collaboration with other authorities to ensure public safety.
However, efforts to contain the fire were hindered by a gathering crowd of onlookers, impeding the firefighters’ progress.
As a precautionary measure, nearby businesses were compelled to cease operations to facilitate the firefighting operation.
Earlier statements from Nairobi County Disaster Management Officer Bramwell Simiyu underscored the frequency of fire incidents in the region, with the county responding to an average of two cases daily.
This incident echoes a tragic event from earlier this year, in February 2024, when an illegal gas refilling plant explosion rocked Embakasi. The blast triggered a massive fire, displacing hundreds of residents, some of whom sought refuge at the Embakasi Social Hall. Thirteen lives were lost, and many sustained injuries in the catastrophe, highlighting the devastating impact of such disasters.
A month later, another fire ravaged a children’s home in Embakasi, leaving its occupants homeless. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, formerly known as Paul Ongili, described the inferno as catastrophic, reducing the entire facility to ashes.
Stay tuned for further updates on the developing situation at the Nacico Co. Chambers Building.
