In a bid to address escalating tensions and restore harmony within the County Assembly, Governor Fernandes Barasa has agreed to convene a meeting with ODM party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

The decision to initiate dialogue comes in the wake of recent leadership changes orchestrated by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in the County Assembly. The replacement of Majority Leader Philip Maina with Geoffrey Ondiro, as directed by Sifuna in a letter dated March 11, triggered a wave of dissent among MCAs and Governor Barasa’s faction.

The ensuing clash between opposing factions paralyzed House business, with Barasa and MCAs aligned with Maina vehemently opposing the changes communicated by Sifuna. This discord has significantly disrupted governance processes within the County Assembly.

During the homecoming ceremony of Lumakanda MCA Benard Mulama in Lugari Constituency, Governor Barasa emphasized the importance of wider consultations among ODM leaders before making decisions that impact local governance. The event, attended by Sifuna, local MP Nabii Nabwera, Kakamega Woman Rep Elsie Muhanda, and numerous MCAs, provided a platform for dialogue and reconciliation efforts.

The agreement to convene a meeting signals a commitment to constructive engagement and conflict resolution. As stakeholders prepare to come to the table, there is optimism that dialogue and collaboration will prevail, ultimately fostering a conducive environment for effective governance and service delivery in the County Assembly.
