In the wake of a devastating road accident near Maungu, Voi, Kenyatta University mourns the loss of students and staff who perished in the Monday tragedy. Swift measures have been taken to airlift the fatally injured for specialized medical care.

University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wainaina, personally assessed the situation by visiting the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi on Tuesday. At the scene, air ambulances stationed at Ikanga airstrip facilitated the transfer of critically injured patients to other medical facilities for urgent treatment.

In a bid to provide the best possible care, a portion of the casualties has been relocated to Aga Khan University Hospital in Mombasa, while others are destined for Avenue Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) in Nairobi.

Additionally, plans are underway for the respectful transfer of deceased victims to KUTRRH, Nairobi. Prof. Wainaina expressed solidarity with injured students under medical care at Moi County Referral Hospital.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Kenyatta University has dispatched a dedicated team comprising doctors, medical personnel, security officers, and wellness officers to Voi, ensuring comprehensive support for those affected.

Monday’s tragic incident unfolded when a university bus collided with a truck en route to Mombasa for an academic excursion. The toll stands at eleven confirmed fatalities, with 21 individuals sustaining severe injuries and four reporting minor wounds.

As the Kenyatta University community grapples with this immense loss, efforts remain focused on providing solace and assistance to the affected students, staff, and their families.
