Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, revealed on Thursday, March 21, that the Kenyan government has initiated communication with TikTok, expressing dissatisfaction with the platform’s adherence to local regulations. Addressing the Public Petitions Committee, Kindiki highlighted concerns over ByteDance Limited’s compliance, the Chinese conglomerate behind TikTok.
Kindiki emphasized that ByteDance Limited must respond to the government’s letter, failing which administrative measures would be pursued by the Ministry of Interior. Despite the scrutiny, Kindiki cautioned against immediate TikTok prohibition in Kenya, stressing the necessity of considering stakeholder opinions and potential repercussions.
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the imperative of conducting a thorough risk-benefit analysis before contemplating drastic measures like a ban. He warned of the perils associated with unregulated cyberspace, citing the exploitation of platforms like TikTok by criminals for dissemination of illicit content.
During the session, Members of Parliament raised concerns about 34 US states restricting TikTok usage on official devices due to security apprehensions. In response, Kindiki assured that his ministry is deliberating on all available options and will conduct a comprehensive evaluation before any action is taken.
As the dialogue progresses, the government remains committed to balancing digital innovation with regulatory oversight, ensuring the protection of citizens’ interests and national security in the digital sphere. The outcome of this deliberation will significantly impact the future of TikTok within Kenya’s digital landscape.
