Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed openness on Monday to the prospect of a potential reconciliation meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aiming to mend the political discord that emerged in the lead-up to the 2022 presidential election.

Addressing queries from journalists at his office in Karen, the Deputy President indicated his willingness to engage in such dialogue, emphasizing the paramount importance of unity within the Mt Kenya region. Gachagua stressed his readiness to convene with other leaders to advance this objective.

During the discussion, Gachagua disclosed details of a tense exchange of words between himself and the former President. He lamented the breakdown of their seventeen-year friendship, particularly in the two years preceding the 2022 election, expressing regret over the rift.

Prior to his tenure as the Member of Parliament for Mathira, Gachagua served as a personal assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta. However, their relationship soured when Gachagua began backing President Ruto. Furthermore, the Deputy President extended an apology to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, denouncing the disrespectful behavior exhibited by certain United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politicians towards her support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
