Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the implementation of green-colored number plates designated for owners of electric vehicles. These number plates will also be allocated to individuals who possess electric motorcycles. Murkomen made this announcement during the launch of the e-mobility policy at KICC on Wednesday, March 27.

He emphasized that motorists currently utilizing green-colored number plates, typically assigned to county enforcement officers known as “kanjos,” would need to apply for new plates. The introduction of these new number plates aims to facilitate the easy identification of electric vehicles and motorcycles on the roads.

Murkomen underscored his ministry’s objective to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, alongside the government’s plans to introduce additional incentives for eco-friendly technology. The issuance of the new number plates will commence after the official signing of the necessary documents.

Additionally, Murkomen disclosed plans for his ministry to install charging infrastructure at its headquarters to spearhead the adoption of electric vehicles. He outlined that the procurement of this infrastructure would take place soon, hinting at the possibility of extending such initiatives to other ministries.

Government data indicates that there are nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles in the country.
