On Wednesday, March 27, tragedy struck as a 22-year-old university student was discovered deceased inside an apartment located in Lang’ata, Nairobi.
Reports indicate that the student had lost Ksh15,000 in a bet placed among friends. This sum was intended to cover his fees, with hopes of surplus for personal expenses.
Following the loss incurred on Tuesday evening, the student experienced a night of distress and vexation. Secluding himself throughout Wednesday, he was overheard conversing with an unidentified individual.
Later that day, when his friends visited, they were unable to locate him. Despite thorough searches within the apartment and numerous unanswered calls, the student was discovered hanging from the rooftop.
Authorities from Lang’ata promptly responded to the scene, uncovering a note addressed to his mother, encouraging her to remain resilient. The body was subsequently transported to the City Mortuary for further examination.
Reportedly, the student had succumbed to depression attributed to recurrent financial losses from gambling.
This tragic event underscores the escalating prevalence of suicide among the youth. According to the Kenya Mental Health Policy 2015-2030, suicide ranks as the second primary cause of non-communicable deaths following road traffic accidents.
Alarmingly, statistics indicate that individuals aged 15 to 24 years face heightened susceptibility to suicide, with a higher proportion of cases reported among females.
