The Vihiga County’s football team for the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association Games (KYISA) has issued a strong warning to its competitors ahead of the upcoming youth tournament set to take place in Kilifi County next month.
Sylvester Kaane, the Chief Officer of Sports in Vihiga, has declared that the county will field a formidable team after an extensive selection process for the event scheduled from April 14 to 21 in Malindi.
Vihiga County is making a return to the annual championship for the first time since 2019. Kaane mentioned, “Apart from the ongoing trials at Kidundu Sports Grounds, we sent out scouts during the Governor’s Cup Finals early this year who have identified the football talent that will be up to the task ahead. We warn our opponents to prepare for a bruising battle.”
This year’s ninth edition has attracted participation from over 30 counties, featuring players aged between 18 and 23 in both genders. Various disciplines including football, beach football, beach volleyball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, and boat racing will be showcased.
Kaane emphasized that the championship aims to promote sports among the youth and discover grassroots talents across the country. He highlighted the need for adequate funding, estimating a requirement of more than Sh. 3 million to support the participation of more than two teams from Vihiga in Kilifi.
Vihiga County last participated in the KYISA competition in 2019 when it was hosted in Busia County. The football team’s journey ended in the quarter-finals during that event.
