On Friday, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue,” the leader of Haiti’s most perilous gang, conveyed a message to the Kenyan police and military ahead of their deployment.
In a public statement, Barbecue proclaimed his intent to perceive the Kenyan police as hostile forces and affirmed his determination to oppose them. He branded the Kenyan police as intruders, stating his refusal to collaborate with them under the belief that they were encroaching upon Haiti’s sovereignty.
“If any Kenyan military or police personnel arrive, they will be deemed aggressors,” the gang leader asserted. “We shall treat them as invaders, and we shall not entertain any collaboration with invaders who seek to undermine our independence,” Barbecue reiterated.
However, Barbecue indicated his readiness to cease hostilities only if his faction was included in the ongoing formation of the transition committee. He claimed to have rebuffed offers for negotiations over the past three years, insisting on continuing the conflict until his demands were met.
The gang leader pledged to intensify efforts to repel any foreign intervention in the ongoing confrontations.
“Each passing day necessitates the formulation of a new strategy for our advancement,” Barbecue emphasized.
“But there is no tranquility. The upcoming days will witness exacerbation of the situation because as long as they refuse to engage all parties in dialogue, the same flawed system will persist,” the gang leader elaborated. His remarks come a week after the demise of another gang leader, Makandal, and his cohorts during a fierce exchange of fire with the police in Pétion-Ville, a suburb in Haiti’s southeastern region.
A report released by the Haiti Police indicated that the gang leader was purportedly eliminated after local residents joined law enforcement in confronting the gang and its associates.
