The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) announced on Wednesday, April 17, that Jane Waigwe Kimani, the wife of former Murang’a governor Mwangi wa Iria, had been arrested. Her brother, Solomon Mutura Kimani, was also arrested on suspicion of involvement in a Ksh140 million corruption case.
The arrests came after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) recommended six charges related to the graft case, which involved procurement irregularities and conflicts of interest in the awarding of publicity tenders in Murang’a County. Media consultancy firms linked to Mwangi wa Iria and his wife were found to have been awarded tenders during the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 financial years.
Mwangi wa Iria, considered the main suspect, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, describing them as a government-led witch-hunt.
Azimio Principal Kalonzo Musyoka vowed on Monday, April 15, that perceived government intimidation would not hinder the coalition’s oversight role. He challenged the EACC to prosecute high-profile individuals within the government who are accused of criminal activities.
Speaking in Mumias, Kakamega County, the Wiper Party Leader assured the former governor of his support throughout the investigation into the corruption allegations.
