Patients in public hospitals face further delays in receiving healthcare services as doctors continue their month-long strike. Attorney General Justin Muturi sought additional time from the court on Wednesday to continue negotiations regarding the ongoing strike.
Senior counsel Ochieng Oduol, representing the AG, informed the court about the government’s progress in the negotiations and stated that necessary reports had been filed. However, logistical issues remain unresolved, and the Council of Governors has yet to provide essential figures for minimum safety services. The AG requested the court to extend the orders restraining the ongoing strike initiated by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU).
Meanwhile, the petitioners have petitioned the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the doctors who have not suspended the strike.
KMPDU informed the court that they have not received all the documents from other parties involved.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) stated its participation in the talks and reconciliation process. On April 3, 2024, the court gave the conflicting parties 14 days to conclude the reconciliation process.
Justice Ongaya extended the orders halting the ongoing doctors’ strike and urged the parties to continue negotiating.
The government, represented by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, has instructed doctors to suspend the strike before engaging in talks, as per the court’s order. However, KMPDU has not complied with this directive.
