The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is appealing to the public for information regarding a man believed to be connected to the brutal murder of Rita Waeni. The DCI has released a CCTV image of the individual, who was last seen walking with Waeni before her death. The man, dressed in a black cardigan, dark trousers, a white cap, and dark sunglasses, is captured in the image, although his full facial features are obscured.

According to the police, Waeni and the suspect were captured on camera heading towards the location where her body was later found. Despite the challenges posed by the blurry image, investigators are confident that someone in the public may recognize him and provide valuable information leading to his apprehension.

The investigation has involved extensive forensic analysis and the collection of statements from persons of interest, as well as data from digital platforms. The Homicide Directorate urges anyone who can identify the man in the image to come forward with information that may aid in his arrest.

Rita Waeni, a third-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), was murdered while residing with her aunt in Syokimau, Machakos County. According to her aunt’s statement, Waeni left home on January 13, 2024, and never returned.

The police revealed that Waeni had been communicating with her killer via Instagram, using the profile name “Carlton Maina,” which was later changed multiple times before being deactivated by the suspect immediately after the murder.
