President William Ruto’s administration has instructed all residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate within 48 hours.

The Cabinet’s decisions, as disclosed after their meeting on Tuesday, extend to all individuals residing in delicate environments. This includes regions susceptible to or already experiencing flooding, mudslides, and landslides, as well as those living along riverbanks. They are required to leave by Thursday of this week.

While in Mai Mahiu on Tuesday afternoon, Ruto assured that the government would facilitate the evacuation, having already identified all affected areas. He further defended the government’s handling of the flooding crisis, which has resulted in more than 120 fatalities and displaced over 190,000 people.

“This is not a time for assigning blame; rather, we must focus on addressing the situation promptly. I urge citizens to relocate from hazardous areas,” stated the president.

According to reports, 71 individuals have been confirmed dead in the Mai Mahiu Kijabe Dam incident, with 91 others reported missing.
