Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has been granted bail of Ksh.10 million after pleading not guilty to corruption charges totaling Sh351 million.
Wa Iria, who has been under the scrutiny of the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) for several weeks, has been instructed not to contact any witnesses for the prosecution and to surrender his travel documents to the court. Moreover, he is prohibited from leaving the court’s jurisdiction without prior permission.
The former governor faces a charge of conspiracy to commit corruption, alleging that between October 21, 2014, and June 19, 2017, while serving as the governor of Murang’a County, he and nine others unlawfully contracted media services worth over Ksh.351 million to Top Image Media Consultant Limited.
In court, Wa Iria’s legal team requested bail, assuring the court of their client’s compliance with all directives. They also raised concerns about potential political motivations behind the charges, urging the court to consider the context of multi-party principles.
The prosecution did not oppose bail for Wa Iria, who voluntarily presented himself at the EACC police station in Nairobi for questioning and fingerprinting as part of the ongoing investigation into corruption allegations
