The National Assembly witnessed a moment of chaos as Members of Parliament clashed over the impeachment proceedings against Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi. Tensions escalated when a group of MPs stood up, shouting for Linturi’s immediate resignation and expressing support for the motion to impeach him.

Speaker Moses Wetangula was compelled to temporarily halt the proceedings and call for order as MPs vocally demanded action. Despite the speaker’s efforts to restore calm, legislators remained steadfast in their demands, continuing to voice their discontent.

During the heated exchange, Kathiani lawmaker Robert Mbui accused Linturi of failing to address the issue of counterfeit fertilizers, which had adversely affected farmers. Mbui emphasized the need for MPs to vote conscientiously on the matter, highlighting the longstanding problem of corruption in the country.

The debate on Linturi’s impeachment was initiated by Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, but Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah cautioned against rushing into conclusions. Ichung’wah stressed the importance of allowing investigative agencies to complete their inquiries before taking further action, noting the semi-autonomous nature of institutions like the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

As tensions remained high in the chamber, the fate of the motion and the future of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Linturi hung in the balance, awaiting further deliberations and decisions.
