On Friday, May 3, President William Ruto issued directives at the State House in Nairobi, assigning Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi, Susan Nakhumicha, and Kithure Kindiki to manage the response to the ongoing flood crisis. During his national address, President Ruto instructed CS Linturi to coordinate the distribution of food supplies to flood-affected regions across the country, utilizing the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) for this purpose. Additionally, he mandated the Ministry of Health to collaborate with various partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Kenya Red Cross to provide assistance to flood victims.
CS Nakhumicha received the responsibility of sourcing resources and logistical support from development partners to ensure the availability of essential medicines, food, and medical supplies to those in need. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Interior was directed to facilitate the relocation and evacuation of affected individuals. Furthermore, the Interior Ministry was instructed to carry out the forced eviction of Nairobi residents residing in structures built on riparian land by 6 pm on Friday, May 3rd.
CS Kindiki was tasked with identifying suitable locations for temporary shelter for displaced persons and leading the comprehensive support program. President Ruto commended the voluntary efforts of citizens in areas like Dandora, Nairobi County, where they took initiative in dismantling their structures and seeking alternative storage solutions, expressing encouragement towards such actions.
