Azimio Chief Principal Raila Odinga criticized President William Ruto’s decision regarding the demolition of structures in Mukuru Kwa Ruben, Nairobi, during a rally in Embakasi South. Raila called for the reversal of the directive instructing the Interior Ministry to conduct demolitions in the riparian lands of Mukuru Kwa Ruben, labeling Ruto’s orders as unethical. Instead, he advocated for the government to prioritize the construction of houses for residents before considering eviction.
Raila emphasized the importance of preserving the houses in Mukuru Kwa Njenga and urged against their demolition, asserting that such actions should not be taken without considering the residents’ welfare. He pledged to resist any government efforts to demolish houses in the Mukuru areas, citing opposition to what he deemed as against the people’s wishes.
Accusing the government of displaying inhumane treatment towards residents, Raila argued that proper measures should have been implemented before resorting to evictions. He urged the head of state to declare the current flooding crisis a national disaster promptly, highlighting the direct impact on thousands of individuals.
During the rally, the former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader also criticized the Education Cabinet Secretary for issuing late-night orders to postpone the reopening of schools. Raila accused the Education CS of neglecting his responsibilities, stating that many students were adversely affected by the delayed directive, which came after they had already traveled to school.
