On Monday, May 6, President William Ruto pledged a Ksh10,000 stipend from the National Government to Kenyans evacuated due to ongoing floods, ensuring their temporary housing needs are met while long-term solutions are sought. Speaking during a visit to Mathare, Nairobi, Ruto assured that the funds would be allocated to the 40,000 households evacuated by government agencies such as the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police, and National Youth Service. He emphasized that the money, provided for three months’ rent, would be closely monitored to prevent misappropriation. Ruto attributed the flooding to climate change and outlined measures Kenya is taking to mitigate future disasters, including tree planting initiatives in flood-prone areas like Mathare.
Additionally, plans are underway to construct 5,000 affordable houses in Mathare, with priority given to evacuated families once completed. Ruto commended Mathare residents for their cooperation, noting that their proactive response had saved numerous lives.
