The government has declared the reopening of all schools after an extended closure prompted by floods. State House officials confirm that schools will officially resume classes on Monday, May 13, 2024. The announcement came after a closed-door meeting where President William Ruto convened with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado.

“Schools to re-open on Monday 13th May 2024,” stated Secretary of State Functions, Mike Gitonga, quoting President William Ruto. The decision to reopen on Monday was influenced by advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department, indicating a projected decrease in rainfall intensity starting this week.

To support the school reopening process, government agencies will collaborate with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to aid in the reconstruction of damaged schools. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are also engaged in flood mitigation efforts nationwide.

Initially scheduled for Monday, April 29, the reopening of schools was postponed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu due to safety concerns arising from heavy rains. President Ruto further delayed the reopening, citing escalated rainfall.

“The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the reopening dates for all schools in the country for the second term until further notice,” announced Ruto during a national address on Friday, May 3.
