President William Ruto announced Kenya’s plans to export maize to Zambia during the Africa Fertiliser and Soil Health Summit in Nairobi. This decision comes after a bumper harvest by Kenyan farmers. Initially, Kenya had negotiated a deal to import maize from Zambia, but due to the surplus harvest, the conversation has shifted towards exporting maize to Zambia instead.

Ruto highlighted the role of subsidized fertilizers issued by the government in boosting farm produce, leading to increased output by Kenyan farmers. He also emphasized the importance of leveraging the African Free Trade Area to promote free trade within the continent.

In a previous announcement in October last year, Ruto expressed plans to ban maize importation to protect local farmers. He declared 2024 as the last year Kenya would receive maize imports.
