President William Ruto has issued a directive for all cabinet secretaries to actively engage in tree planting efforts. Speaking during a tree-planting event in Murang’a county, Ruto mandated all ministers to participate in tree planting activities daily starting from Monday, May 13th. He emphasized that this initiative would continue for the next six months, with each ministry allocated specific days for tree planting.

“We are not just planting trees today; from Monday, this exercise will continue ministry by ministry daily,” Ruto emphasized. “For the next six months, every ministry will be in charge for a day for planting trees,” he added.

The goal of this initiative is to contribute towards the government’s target of planting 15 billion trees. President Ruto underscored that this effort would also raise awareness among communities about the importance of environmental conservation.

“We want our development to be on a sustainable basis, by making sure that as we develop with harmony with our environment,” he explained.

Earlier in March, Ruto expressed disappointment after cabinet secretaries failed to comply with his instructions regarding the nationwide tree-planting exercise. He had instructed them to draft and submit plans for ensuring the success of the project. However, he noted that meaningful strategies and plans had not been received from the cabinet secretaries.

“Every Cabinet Minister has already been assigned two counties, and we will be expecting clarity. Every Cabinet Secretary and their team are doing on the tree planting exercise,” Ruto stated.
