Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u has announced the release of Ksh10 billion to address the impact of climate change in counties.
Ndung’u detailed the allocation of funds to 47 counties for the financial year 2023/24. Notably, Mombasa and Nairobi did not receive funding.
The Ksh10 billion funding was sourced from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, the German Government, and the County Contribution (County Climate).
Kisii received the highest allocation with Ksh420 million, followed by Migori (Ksh409 million) and Kakamega (Ksh401 million). Conversely, Kiambu, Lamu, and Kirinyaga received the lowest amounts.
Counties in the North Rift, including Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Marsabit, received substantial allocations.
Ndung’u emphasized that the allocations aimed to support locally-led climate action and resilience initiatives.
President William Ruto’s administration has prioritized climate change mitigation efforts nationwide. Despite recent floods, the United Nations warned of impending drought in Kenya due to changing weather patterns.
