Several people have reportedly become trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in the Mathare area of Nairobi on Tuesday.

The collapse occurred in the afternoon when the building, which had been partially demolished, became unstable. According to reports, more than ten individuals were trapped, most of whom were residents collecting scrap metal from the site after the demolition.

In response to the incident, the Kenya Red Cross Society promptly initiated a rescue operation to assist the victims. “There are concerns that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Our rescue team has been deployed,” confirmed the Kenya Red Cross.

Videos circulated widely depicted nearby residents watching from a distance as responders worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped. After an hour of search efforts, four individuals were successfully extricated from the debris and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

“Efforts to locate others believed to be trapped are ongoing,” stated the Kenya Red Cross in a release.

This incident comes just four days after a similar tragedy in Bungoma County, where two people reportedly lost their lives and several others were rescued from a collapsed building. Witnesses claimed the collapse occurred following partial demolition by the County Government to facilitate the expansion of Masinde Muliro Stadium. Photos from the scene showed the building severely damaged, with one side bent and the lower section completely destroyed.

Immediately after the collapse, local youth rushed to the site to scavenge for scrap metal.

The incident in Mathare happened shortly after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo’s visit to inspect Masinde Muliro Stadium, scheduled to host Madaraka Day celebrations.
