Four men have been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of defiling a 14-year-old girl in the Laini Saba area of Kibera, Nairobi.

The convicts, Emmanuel Mutemi, Kennedy Irungu, Peter Mwaura, and Ben Thuo, committed the crime on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

Kibera Law Courts Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul, in delivering the sentence, stated that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, supported by testimonies from nine prosecution witnesses and exhibits that placed the four men at the crime scene. “The magistrate also noted that the offence of defilement has become so rampant in Kibra hence, the sentence should be a deterrent to those intending to pursue that direction in society,” the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) noted in a statement on Thursday.

Court submissions revealed that the victim was heading home from a church service to usher in the new year on January 1, 2022, at midnight when the four men accosted her.

She testified that while her friend managed to escape, she was cornered by the men, who took her to a nearby abandoned mud house and took turns defiling her from midnight until daybreak.

“She further told the court that they threatened to slit her throat if she tried to scream for help,” the ODPP added.

The victim managed to identify the perpetrators through the illumination of street lights and recognized them as people she saw daily in the neighborhood.
