Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has issued a directive prohibiting the sale, provision, and use of khat, commonly known as muguka, throughout the county.

Nassir announced this directive on Thursday at Port Reitz Hospital in Mombasa, bringing attention to the extensive use of the stimulant drug along the Coast, including among school-age children.

Expressing concern, Nassir noted that muguka traders have flouted existing regulations intended to protect children from the drug’s influence, with some even selling it to underage individuals. “Despite our efforts to establish guidelines for harmonious coexistence between users and the community, they have persistently declined to comply. Consequently, following careful legal deliberation, I have determined that my directive is warranted,” Nassir stated. “As such, I have enacted an executive order to bar the entry, sale, and use of muguka in Mombasa.”

Nassir also underscored the negative health repercussions associated with muguka use. “The levels of cathine and cathinone in muguka are dangerously elevated. Ingesting as few as 20 leaves can lead to harmful effects on individuals, particularly children. Consider the potential ramifications if consumed during school hours,” he observed.

“We have conducted comprehensive consultations, and this directive remains in effect. I am confident that the public will recognize the necessity of this decision for the welfare of our community.”
