On Wednesday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja became the latest UDA leader to criticize a fellow party member. Speaking at a UDA Delegates Conference in Nairobi, Sakaja indirectly targeted the Deputy President, calling him a bully. He argued that the Deputy President’s recent complaints about his own tribulations were hypocritical, as he had subjected other politicians to similar treatment over the past two years.
Sakaja referred to Deputy President Gachagua’s recent comments about retreating to the Mount Kenya Forest to pray over the State of the Nation, amid rumors that he was keeping a low profile after an alleged fallout with President William Ruto. “You cannot be bullying people for two years in every county and now that you have been trending for a week you are crying and have gone to the forests,” Sakaja remarked, adding, “Bullies are the biggest cowards!”
Governor Sakaja defended his tenure, claiming that his efforts to implement meaningful changes and close corruption loopholes had made him a target for criticism. He also highlighted his efforts to unify the county by garnering support from opposition MCAs for his agenda.
Sakaja, a former Nairobi Senator, praised President Ruto for mentoring and advising him in his efforts to unite the county.
Sakaja’s remarks came shortly after UDA Secretary General Cleopas Malala sent a letter to Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, instructing them to moderate their political rhetoric. Sudi and Wamuchomba had made comments perceived as attacks on Deputy President Gachagua, while Kahiga had openly declared his support for Gachagua in a forceful manner.
In response, Sudi and Kahiga, in separate posts, fired back at Malala, asserting that he was unfit to be the UDA Secretary General.
