A violent clash erupted during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party elections in Nairobi on Friday afternoon as supporters of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya collided.
The conflict ignited when a faction loyal to MP Gakuya aggressively barred the Governor’s supporters from participating in the elections. In retaliation, Sakaja’s supporters engaged in a fierce brawl, forcing the election officials to halt the process abruptly.
Accusations of blatant irregularities were hurled at the election officials, with claims that non-party members were illicitly allowed to vote.
Police officers, on high alert, swiftly intervened to suppress the turmoil, compelling the election officials to flee for their safety. The officers fired tear gas to disperse the combative party members. Gakuya’s supporters could be heard chanting vehemently for Sakaja’s ouster.
“We arrived at the polling center early and lined up to vote, only for a group of individuals to incite chaos,” one voter recounted. “Certain leaders in this area orchestrated the violence, forcing the police to step in.”
Amidst the disorder, voters demanded that the party leadership take decisive action against those responsible for orchestrating such disruptive incidents.
