Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has delivered a stern 14-day ultimatum to land rate defaulters, failure to which, their propertis will be auctioned if they fail to settle their debts.
Sakaja disclosed the names of the defaulters in a comprehensive 72-page document accessible on the county government’s official website. As of April 2024, numerous defaulters owe between Ksh50,000 and Ksh31 million in overdue rates.
To incentivize payment, the governor has offered a complete waiver on penalties, allowing landowners to pay the original land rates. “Owners of all the LR numbers with balances as of 11th April 2024 are advised to make their outstanding Land Rates payments within 14 days of this notice,” the notice declared.
Land rate invoices can be obtained at the NCCG Service Centre on the 1st Floor of City Hall, or through self-service by creating an account on the Nairobipay online portal. The county government also urged owners of the listed properties to clear their outstanding land rates arrears.
“Failure to comply will result in penalties, interest, and enforcement actions, including the auction of properties by the Nairobi City County Government,” the notice warned.
The county maintains a no-cash policy for revenue collection.
Physical planner Patrick Analo, the Nairobi County Secretary and Head of the County Public Service, identified 16 affected zones, including Westlands, Starehe, Ruaraka, Roysambu, Mathare, Makadara, Lang’ata, Kasarani, Kibra, Kamukunji, Dagoretti North, and Dagoretti South. Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Embakasi North, Embakasi Central, Embakasi South, and Unzoned properties were also listed among the affected areas.
The county expects to generate Ksh30 billion in revenue if landowners settle their dues.
