Former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu claimed on Thursday that President William Ruto is secretly orchestrating the attacks on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

During an interview, Waititu alleged that Ruto was using certain party leaders to create unrest in Mt. Kenya. Waititu stressed that this was part of a strategy to prevent any leader from the region from gaining full support for a presidential bid in 2027.

“We’ve learned our lesson; we will never again vote for someone outside our region. People have seen that this outsider (Ruto) came to divide us,” he remarked. Waititu suggested that Ruto chose running mates he could easily control and follow his directives.

To support his claim, Waititu said that he, along with former governors Kiraitu Murungi of Meru and Francis Kimemia of Nyandarua, were initially promised the position before Ruto changed his mind and selected Gachagua.

Waititu expressed that Gachagua and other leaders from the region in the Kenya Kwanza government lacked the authority to make decisions or alter directives.

Additionally, Waititu warned the unnamed leaders that they would face the same fate when circumstances change. He emphasized the need for regional leaders to unite.

“We need a single candidate representing our region in the next election. This candidate must understand the mandate and the reasons for our support,” he stressed. The former governor argued that if the region had elected a leader who prioritized their interests, the locals wouldn’t be facing issues like demolitions, taxes, or bans.

He added that this situation should serve as a lesson for all Mt. Kenya residents and their leaders to remain united.
