Dagoretti Member of the National Assembly, Beatrice Elachi, delivered a scathing critique of lawmakers on Thursday, admonishing them for vilifying Kenya Power executives amidst the company’s ongoing struggles.
Addressing Parliament, the outspoken lawmaker accused certain leaders of unfairly targeting Kenya Power’s management, despite having engaged in business transactions with the company, known by its KPLC ticker, during its prosperous period. She emphasized that Kenya Power officials are public servants and deserve the opportunity to guide the institution toward profitability.
Elachi asserted, “I have observed a recent surge in negative campaigns against them, and we must desist because it is us who have contributed to Kenya Power’s downfall. We cannot shift blame onto them when we are aware of our own missteps.” She added, “Our leadership has failed us. During Kenya Power’s heyday, many of us conducted business with them, ultimately weakening the institution. Now, we seek to scapegoat its officers. This is unfair to the hardworking Kenyans employed there.”
Moreover, Elachi disclosed lawmakers’ concerns regarding the gradual erosion of Kenya Power’s authority, with powers seemingly transferring to the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) Limited. Despite this trend, she advocated for reinforcing Kenya Power’s mandate, arguing that MPs are better positioned to hold its executives accountable for service delivery.
Highlighting a specific incident where a contractor issued a Ksh1 million electricity bill to a mosque in Amboseli and subsequently disappeared, Elachi emphasized the challenges faced by worshippers in verifying the authenticity of the bill. Consequently, she urged her colleagues to acknowledge their role in exacerbating Kenya Power’s challenges.
Elachi’s remarks underscored the need for collective accountability among lawmakers and a more constructive approach to addressing Kenya Power’s issues.
